When we were first married, thirty-five years ago, my wife and I ate a lot of tuna casserole. I mean, a lot. Of course, back then, I think everyone did. (Tuna Helper came on the scene in the early 1970s and I ate a fair amount of that as a kid.)

I still like it best when it’s made simply: tuna, noodles, peas, mushroom soup, and cracker crumbs.

Supper Club, if you haven’t tried them before, garlic scapes are the flower stalks of a garlic plant. They look like curly green onions but they taste like garlic.

Okay, confession time: it never occurred to me to use garlic scapes in pesto. I know, duh, right? At least until I was talking garlic scapes with a very nice lady at our farmers market last Saturday morning and she handed me a copy of her recipe. (Alas, I misplaced hers somehow — a microburst thunderstorm came out of nowhere as we were talking — but it was easy enough to make with my standard pesto recipe.)

For all but the winter months, Saturday morning means Farmers Market for us. We are incredibly fortunate to have a vibrant farming community and, three times each week, the opportunity to get our hands on some of the best food you can imagine. This week we found beautiful asparagus, strawberries, romaine, spinach, chard, green onions, and a dozen eggs.

Naturally, dinner that night included a sheet pan of simply roasted vegetables including the asparagus.
