Julia Child once said, “How can a nation be called great if its bread tastes like Kleenex?”

I agree wholeheartedly. If you’re lucky enough to have a good bakery nearby, one where you can taste the care and skill and love and one you can afford regularly, cherish it and the baker inside. They are a gift.

Likewise, if someone in your life can make a good crusty loaf which you get to look forward to, cherish them and don’t take it for granted. (And let them know!)

Banana Bread, Revisited

As you may remember, I wrote about my previous banana bread making adventure roughly a year ago. Needless to say, that adventure hasn’t ended (and possibly never will).

Over the last year, I’ve read literally hundreds of banana bread recipes and – you probably know this already but I wasn’t specifically aware – there are entire books published with nothing but dozens and dozens of banana bread recipes!

Brown Soda Bread

One of the kids calls my brown soda bread the “not pretty bread” or the “soup bread.” (That last one because it’s not really best for sandwiches. For that try muffuletta bread!)

But everyone loves it and their eyes light up when they see it resting on the board. Granted, any homemade bread tends to make that happen.

Myself, I like it best with a small pat of real salted butter, maybe a spoon of local jam or some local honey, and a bracing cup of coffee. It’s the simple joys.

Pumpkin Rye Bread

The danger (?) of buying ingredients at stores like Costco is now you own A LOT of whatever. This year I came home with a goodly amount of organic canned pumpkin. A very tasty pumpkin, I might add. So I went in search of some new ways to use it and I found this recipe.

And as you know, I love using rye flour! This is similar to my banana bread recipe too.
